MISSION

As we head into our tenth year, the NYMIF’s mission remains the same – to elevate and celebrate the community of musical improvisors, actors, singers, and musicians who gather in NYC once a year to meet, perform and show off the form!

The first New York Musical Improv Festival was created ten years ago to promote the art musical improv to wider audiences as well as bring together performers of the form from all over the world!  Since then, musical improv has exploded across the country with new programs starting every year.  In New York City, musical house teams have become a staple at all of the major comedy theaters. The Magnet has expanded its own program to four levels and now boasts eight musical house teams!

Past festivals have included teams and performers from cities across the US, (Austin TX, Baltimore, Boston, Cambridge, Chicago, Delray Beach FL, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Providence, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington DC), Canada (Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver), Australia, Germany, New Zealand, and Paris France! NYMIF has featured everything from Tony Award winning performers to improvised cabarets, Sondheim to Hip-hop, college teams, duo and solo shows, even improvised musical versions of everything from Law & Order to Star Trek.
